If you often forget to water your houseplants until the leaves start to wilt, watering globes could be a helpful solution. These decorative glass bulbs release water slowly into the soil, keeping plants hydrated even when you’re away for a few days.
How watering globes work
Watering globes consist of a hollow bulb attached to a long stem. When you fill the bulb with water and insert the stem into the soil, water begins to trickle out. As the soil absorbs the moisture, air gradually enters the bulb, allowing more water to flow. This process keeps the soil consistently damp without overwatering.
What they can do (and what they can’t)
While watering globes don’t eliminate plant care completely, they do help maintain steady moisture in the soil, which is ideal for plants that like a consistent level of hydration, such as ferns. They are not recommended for succulents or plants that prefer to dry out between waterings.
Globes can also help if you’re away for a few days. How quickly they empty depends on the size of the bulb, the plant’s water needs, the type of compost, and the room temperature. It’s best to test your globes a few times before leaving so you know how long they will last.

How to use a watering globe
-
Water your plant thoroughly before inserting the globe, as dry soil will cause the globe to empty too quickly.
-
Use a pencil or dibber to make a hole in the compost where the globe will sit.
-
Rinse the globe before the first use to remove any dust. Pour water into the stem using a jug or tap.
-
Fill the globe about three-quarters full.
-
Quickly invert the globe and place the stem into the hole in the compost, taking care not to force it. Firm the soil around the stem.
-
When the globe is nearly empty, remove it, refill and replace it.
Troubleshooting watering globes
-
If the stem becomes blocked with soil, use a cotton bud or pipe cleaner to clear it.
-
Cloudiness inside the globe can indicate mould. Clean it with a mixture of baking soda, lemon juice and white vinegar.
