Early Preparation for Spring Planting

Early Preparation for Spring Planting

As January turns into February, gardeners can begin shifting from planning to action. While winter conditions may still limit outdoor work, early preparation plays a key role in how well your garden performs once growth begins in earnest.

Preparing soil for the growing season

Healthy soil warms faster and supports stronger plants. Begin by clearing weeds and remaining debris from borders and beds. Adding compost or well rotted organic matter improves structure, fertility, and drainage.

If soil is compacted, gentle cultivation can help, but avoid working very wet ground as this can cause long term damage.

Starting seeds indoors

February is ideal for sowing many seeds indoors, particularly vegetables and hardy annuals. Clean trays, fresh compost, and good light are essential. Position seedlings on windowsills, in greenhouses, or in propagators where temperatures are stable.

Popular early sowings include onions, leeks, sweet peas, and early salad crops. Starting seeds now gives plants time to establish before planting out.

Caring for overwintering plants

Borders and containers benefit from attention as temperatures gradually rise. Remove dead stems that were left for winter protection once the worst frosts have passed. Refresh compost in pots and check that drainage holes are clear.

This is also a good time to divide overcrowded perennials if conditions allow, helping improve flowering later in the year.

Preparing containers and raised beds

Containers warm more quickly than open ground, making them ideal for early planting. Clean pots thoroughly and check for cracks caused by frost. Raised beds may also benefit from topping up with compost to replace nutrients lost over winter.

Planning planting schemes

February is a good moment to review planting plans and make adjustments. Consider colour combinations, flowering times, and plant heights to ensure balanced displays throughout the year.

Visiting Polhill Garden Centre can provide inspiration and practical advice, helping you choose plants and materials suited to Kent gardens and local conditions.

Creating a manageable workload

Early preparation spreads tasks more evenly across the season. By tackling soil improvement, seed sowing, and general maintenance now, you avoid a rush when spring arrives.

Small, consistent efforts in February help create a smoother and more enjoyable gardening year, with healthier plants and better results.
