Pesky pests like mourning flies and other insects can be frustrating for houseplant owners. While some cause minimal damage, others can seriously harm your plants if left unchecked. Spotting pests early is the key to keeping your houseplants healthy.
Mourning flies
Mourning flies, or fungus gnats, are small black flies that often emerge when you water your plants. If you notice them, move the affected plant away from others to prevent eggs being laid in surrounding soil. Fungus gnats need moist soil to reproduce, so letting the soil dry out for around two weeks can break their life cycle. Covering the soil with pebbles, horticultural grit or decorative products designed for pots can also stop them laying eggs and make your plant look attractive.
Mealybugs
Mealybugs appear as tiny white, cotton-like insects. They feed on sap, distorting growth and potentially killing plants if infestations are heavy. Their waxy coating makes them resistant to many pesticides. For small infestations, dab individual bugs with a cotton swab soaked in rubbing alcohol. For larger problems, mix water and rubbing alcohol into a spray and isolate the plant. Neem oil can also be effective.
Spider mites
These sap-sucking pests are very small and often go unnoticed until fine webs appear. Infested leaves may turn yellow, and untreated plants can die. Start by washing the plant with a strong stream of water to dislodge mites. If necessary, follow up with neem oil or a suitable insecticide.
Aphids
Aphids are among the most common houseplant pests, often found on stems and the undersides of leaves. They are usually green but can appear in other colours. Regular sprays of water, combined with neem oil or rubbing alcohol, may be needed weekly for several weeks to control them effectively.
Scale insects
Scale insects are usually covered in a waxy coating, often whitish, that hides the insect underneath. They suck sap from plants and can be fatal in heavy infestations. Small numbers can be removed manually, but adults often require a spray of neem oil or canola oil. The waxy coating can make control challenging.
