How to choose the perfect Christmas tree for your home

How to choose the perfect Christmas tree for your home

Choosing a Christmas tree should feel joyful rather than overwhelming. With so many shapes, scents and needle types to consider, it helps to know what to look for before you head out. Picture yourself picking out a tree on a crisp winter day and feeling certain you’ve chosen one that suits your home. Whether you favour Pine, Fir or Spruce, these pointers will help you find a tree that feels just right.

Real Christmas tree varieties

Before you visit the shop, think about the look and scent you prefer, as each type has its own character.

Nordmann Fir

A popular choice with deep green needles that stay on the tree for a long time.

Fraser Fir

Known for its festive scent. The needles are dark green with a soft silver underside and hold well.

Norway Spruce

A classic tree with a traditional Christmas fragrance. It needs regular watering to help keep the needles in place.

Blue Spruce

Recognised by its blue-tinted needles and sturdy branches that can support heavier decorations. This one also benefits from good watering.

Size and shape

It’s easy to fall for a tree only to realise it’s far too large once you try to fit it through the door. Measuring the space in advance makes things much easier. Check the height of the ceiling and the width of the area where the tree will stand.
Think about the shape too. Do you want a full, broad tree that fills a room or something slender for a narrow corner? Also consider where heat sources are, as it’s best to keep your tree away from radiators or fireplaces.

What to check when choosing a real tree

Freshness is key. Gently pull your hand along a branch. A few loose needles are normal yet a heavy drop usually means the tree is past its best.
Don’t forget a sturdy stand to keep the tree upright. Many stands also help the trunk take up water. Staff in our centre can help with choosing a stand and can make a fresh cut at the base of the tree so it absorbs water more easily.

Thinking about an artificial tree instead

Artificial trees have improved greatly over the years and can be used again and again. They come in many styles, from natural-looking green designs to snowy white versions, pre-lit trees, slim shapes for small rooms and larger statement pieces. If you want something that can be stored away in the loft and brought out every December with no needle drop, an artificial tree may suit you well. When you no longer need it, you can pass it on, donate it or look for recycling options.

We’d love to welcome you in store this season so you can enjoy choosing your tree in person and soak up the festive atmosphere.
