5 Flowering Christmas Houseplants to Brighten Your Home

The festive season is here, and while gifts are on your mind, don’t forget to bring a touch of nature into your home. Flowering Christmas houseplants brighten interiors with colour and add seasonal charm. Here are five of our favourites and tips on how to care for them.

Poinsettia

Poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima) are the quintessential Christmas plant, with deep green leaves and striking crimson bracts. Keep them warm – at least 15°C – and away from draughts. Place in bright, indirect light and water sparingly, misting occasionally. Always wear gloves when handling, as the sap can irritate the skin.

Christmas Cactus

Schlumbergera, or Christmas cactus, is admired for its long, segmented stems and vibrant blooms. It prefers a warm, bright spot away from direct sunlight. Water only when the compost has dried out. After flowering, move it to a cooler room for two months with minimal watering. Returning it to warmth in September helps the plant develop flower buds for the next Christmas.

Kalanchoe

Kalanchoes display clusters of vivid flowers against glossy green leaves. Place them in bright, indirect light and maintain a temperature of 15–20°C during the day, not dropping below 10°C at night. Use a well-drained potting mix and allow the compost to dry between waterings. Remove spent flowers to encourage new blooms.

Hyacinths

Forced hyacinths bring their fragrance and colour indoors early. Choose bulbs labelled for indoor growing and plant them in pots. Keep them in a cool, dark place for around six weeks, watering when dry. When shoots appear, move them into light to encourage growth and flowering.

Cyclamen

Cyclamens are admired for their silver-marbled leaves and bright pink or white flowers. They prefer shade and should be kept out of direct light. Water from below by allowing the pot to sit in a saucer of water until the compost is moist, then remove to drain. Feed occasionally with houseplant fertiliser. When the plant dies back, store it in a cool, dry place and water sparingly until growth resumes.
