Step into the tightly knit, opulent world of 1870s New York high society with this exquisite edition of The Age of Innocence, beautifully presented by The Cranford Collection. The narrative follows Newland Archer, a wealthy and well-respected lawyer who is comfortably betrothed to the charming, sweet, but entirely conventional May Welland. Newland's perfectly ordered, traditional world begins to unravel with the sudden arrival of Mays cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska. Returning to New York after scandalously fleeing her abusive European husband, Ellen brings with her an air of foreign sophistication, an independent spirit, and a heavy hint of social ostracism from the citys rigid elite.
Intrigued and increasingly captivated by Ellen's unconventional views, Newland finds himself profoundly questioning the superficiality and strict, unspoken rules of his own privileged circle. He becomes agonizingly torn between the secure, expected future offered by his marriage to May and the passionate, intellectual connection he shares with Ellen. Whartons Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece beautifully portrays the suffocating elegance of a bygone era, the sacrifices made in the name of propriety, and the enduring tragedy of missed opportunities. Featuring a stunning, intricately designed decorative cover, this premium hardback volume from The Cranford Collection makes a magnificent display piece for any home library and a truly sophisticated gift for classic literature lovers.
